Virginia’s CCR&R system has been on journey involving transitions in one form or another for the past two decades.

Historical Timeline – The Early Years

1989: Virginia formed a statewide volunteer CCR&R Network with 24 member agencies.


1992: Virginia Child Care Resource & Referral Network (VACCRRN) was incorporated as 501(c)3  organization.

2002: VACCRRN was awarded a contract as a Managing Hub to create a statewide CCR&R system for Virginia. Service Delivery areas were identified and contracts were awarded to14 local CCR&R agencies.  NACCRRAware was purchased as the official CCR&R database for Virginia.

2004: VACCRRN transitioned from a member only board to a community based board of  directors.

2005: The VACCRRN Board with member agencies developed a five-year strategic plan (2005-2010).

2006: Service delivery areas were redrawn to better serve clients and child care providers and an RFP was issued with 12 agencies being awarded a contract to deliver CCR&R services statewide.

2010: The VACCRRN Board with representatives from member agencies developed a new strategic plan to guide the CCR&R system for the next three years. (2010 – 2013).  As a result of the new strategic direction, a Centralized Referral process was implemented.

va-cca-logo2012: VACCRRN changed its name to Child Care Aware of Virginia and developed a branding plan that included reorganizing to create five regional professional development resource and technical assistance centers.

2013: Child Care Aware of Virginia Regional Professional Development Resource & Technical Assistance Centers:

            • Child Care Aware of Northern Virginia
            • Child Care Aware of Central Virginia
            • Child Care Aware of Eastern Virginia
            • Child Care Aware of Piedmont Virginia
            • Child Care Aware of Western Virginia
